Short answer

Matusadona sits on the southern shore of Lake Kariba, about 20 km across the water from Kariba town. The park headquarters and main campsite are at Tashinga in the north-west, the road gate is Chifudze in the far south-west, and the Sanyati Gorge forms the eastern edge. Load an offline map before you travel, because signal inside the park is patchy.

Download the official park map

Neither the Matusadona Conservation Trust nor ZimParks publishes a downloadable visitor map of the park online. The park's February 2026 information pack lists GPS positions for its entry points, and wilderness campers are sent an Avenza map with directions when they book. The management plan, published by ZimParks, contains the park's zoning and road maps, but it is a 168-page planning document rather than a visitor map.

Key coordinates

Save these before you go. Mobile coverage inside the park is patchy at best, and a set of waypoints in an offline app will get you out of trouble faster than anything else.

PlaceWhat it isCoordinates
Tashinga Park headquarters, reception, shop, clinic, the main campsite and a 700 m airstrip, on the Ume estuary -16.813071, 28.446178
Ume River entry point The western entry on the Ume, the river that forms the park's western boundary -16.848753, 28.429879
Changa Entry point and harbour on the north-eastern shore, next to Changa Safari Camp -16.738189, 28.673281
Sanyati Gorge Entry point at the mouth of the gorge that forms the eastern boundary -16.827089, 28.759403
Chifudze gate The road gate in the south-west, 68 km from Tashinga by ZimParks' count -17.203526, 28.487478

Finding your way

  • Download the Zimbabwe region in OsmAnd or Organic Maps, or load Tracks4Africa, before you leave Harare or Kariba town. The park says signal is available in certain areas but is not always reliable.
  • Wilderness campsites come with an Avenza map and directions from the park when you book. Ask for it if it does not arrive.
  • The escarpment roads need a safety permit for tourists. Ask at Tashinga reception before you plan a route up the escarpment.
  • Off-road driving is prohibited, the speed limit is 40 km/h and no more than three vehicles may be at one sighting.
  • The lakeshore moves. When Lake Kariba drops, land below the high-water mark becomes part of the park, and tracks along the shore change with the water.

If something goes wrong

The park's advice is plain: if you break down, stay in your car and either call or wait for help. Never walk off to look for assistance or a phone signal. The park control centre numbers are +263 716 452 059 and +263 776 180 570, and the park itself warns that it cannot always guarantee a signal.

Driving is permitted from sunrise to sunset. The information pack also allows movement from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, which is best read as the margin for getting to and from camp rather than extra game-drive time.

Where the coordinates come from

The five entry-point positions on this page are the ones the park itself publishes. We have not added any we could not source, so lodges and airstrips without an official coordinate are not pinned. The shape of the park, the roads and the gates on the homepage map come from OpenStreetMap.
