When to go

The best time to visit Matusadona

June to October is the season most people aim for, when the bush dries out and the game comes down to the lakeshore grass. But in Matusadona the month is only half the question. The other half is how high Lake Kariba stands, and almost nobody writes about that.

If you only want the answer

June to September. July here is genuinely rainless, 1 mm on the thirty-year average, against 332 mm in January. Nothing concentrates animals like water that has stopped falling.

Prime Dry but hot Shoulder Green season Bar height is average rainfall, the figure above it is the daytime high. The $ signs show what a night in the park runs in that period.

The year, season by season

The periods below are how this park actually divides its year, with thirty-year climate averages against each month. Averages hide bad years: a dry January still happens, and so does a wet July.

January to March$

Changa green season from $440 international

Green season

Hot and wet. Afternoon thunderstorms, dramatic skies and green bush in which game is harder to find. Lodges charge green-season rates. Zimbabwe Field Guide says game-viewing roads close in the rains; the park has not confirmed that, so ask before you plan a self-drive.

  1. January 26.7° day, 20.2° night 332 mm over 25 wet days
  2. February 26.0° day, 19.9° night 269 mm over 23 wet days
  3. March 26.7° day, 19.5° night 155 mm over 16 wet days

April$$

Changa mid season $567

Shoulder

The changeover. The park's information pack still counts April as wet, its management plan already calls it cool and dry. Mid-season rates at some lodges, lush grass and few visitors.

  1. April 26.6° day, 18.0° night 34 mm over 6 wet days

May$$

Changa mid season $567

Shoulder

Cool and dry. The park's Jenje bush camp opens for the dry season. One May visitor described clear views of the escarpment with no bushfire haze and bush that was still quite lush.

  1. May 24.6° day, 14.5° night 9 mm over 1 wet day

June to July$$$

Changa high season $682

Prime

Cool and dry, and high season at the lodges. Days are pleasant, but nights can drop to around 5°C, so pack warm layers for early boats and open vehicles.

  1. June 22.8° day, 12.3° night 4 mm over 1 wet day
  2. July 22.9° day, 11.8° night 1 mm, and rarely a whole wet day

August to September$$$

Bumi Hills peak $1,390 in September

Prime

Hot and dry. Game concentrates on the lakeshore grassland and at the springs, and viewing is at its best. September carries the highest lodge rates of the year.

  1. August 25.8° day, 13.7° night 1 mm, and rarely a whole wet day
  2. September 30.0° day, 17.9° night 1 mm, and rarely a whole wet day

October$$$

Changa high season $682

Shoulder

The hottest month, 40°C by the park's own figures and mid-40s by one lodge's. Wildlife gathers at the last water. Kariba's international tigerfish tournament is traditionally held in October; check the dates for your year.

  1. October 33.0° day, 21.2° night 13 mm over 3 wet days

November to December$

Changa green season; Bumi Hills lowest in December

Shoulder Green season

The rains arrive. Heat before the storms, then green bush and dispersed game. Green-season rates start on 1 November at some lodges, and December brings the lowest rates of the year along with a busy Kariba town over the holidays.

  1. November 30.1° day, 21.2° night 134 mm over 15 wet days
  2. December 27.3° day, 20.3° night 261 mm over 22 wet days

Climate figures are Open-Meteo climate normals, 1991 to 2020, measured at -16.975, 28.625. Prime, shoulder and green are worked out against this park's own year, not a fixed threshold: the four months with the least rain, the four with the most, and the rest in between. Full charts on the weather page.

The short version

The dry months, roughly May to October, are when Matusadona works best. Water inland dries up, the bush thins and elephant, buffalo and the antelope move to the grassland along the shore, where a boat or a vehicle can reach them. August to October is the most concentrated and the hottest; June and July are cooler, with cold nights on the water.

The rains, roughly November to March or April, bring storms, sunsets and green-season rates, but game spreads out and some interior roads may be hard going. Sources differ on the season boundaries by a month either way, so treat every date on this page as approximate.

Why the lake level matters as much as the month

Matusadona's best game viewing is on the grassland along the shore, a torpedo grass that did not exist here before the dam. It grows on ground that floods and drains with the lake, and the park's management plan says its area swings between about 4,400 and 10,200 hectares depending on the water. Sustained high or sustained low levels both make it less productive.

On 22 September 2026 the Zambezi River Authority put Lake Kariba at 481.13 m, 40.89% of usable storage, against 477.84 m and 16.28% on the same date in 2025. Early-September readings show three very different years: about 476.7 m in 2024, about 478.3 m in 2025 and about 481.5 m in 2026. The lake is designed to operate between 475.50 m and 488.50 m.

What a lower lake changes on the ground: at low levels Spurwing joins the mainland, the vehicle ferry lands at Fothergill or Spurwing depending on the water, and some houseboats leave from a different harbour. We have not found a sourced month-by-month cycle for the lake, so we do not publish one. Check the authority's lake-level page before you book, and ask your camp what the current level means for boats and game drives.

What the climate figures do and do not say

The charts above come from a climate model's thirty-year normals, the same method we use for every park in this network. For Matusadona that model gives noticeably more rain than the park's own figures: the management plan puts the average at 698 mm a year and the information pack at 650 mm. Read the monthly bars for the shape of the year, dry from May to October and wettest from December to February, rather than for exact totals.

Birding: the park lists around 400 species and its specials include Taita falcon, African pitta and Pel's fishing-owl. No official source names the best birding months, so we do not either.
